Fromage Tasting in Buckhead

The last time I had a cheese course like this was at Place Maubert in Paris’ Latin Quarter, at the Fromagerie Laurent Dubois. It was there that I had my first education of the various cheese regions of France, the different styles, flavors and wine pairings for each variety.

Then came the Cheeses of Europe tasting event in Atlanta, and I felt like once again I was taking a journey through France. From the mild taste of Normany’s Camembert to the bold flavor of southern France’s Roquefort, this was the quintessential example of fun and fromage.

Cheeses of Europe is a movement to introduce these wonderful cheeses of France to a neighborhood near you. The staff are not only knowledgeable about the cheeses, but also passionate in sharing recipes, pairing suggestions, as well as back stories of the cheeses. For example, did you know that the brand Île de France cheese was named after the French ocean liner, SS Île de France? Known to cheese lovers as the first ship to carry Brie Cheese to the United States (it also was the first ship ever equipped with refrigeration) it had a long and illustrious story beyond its role in the history of fromage. The first major ocean liner built after World War I, it is often considered the most beautifully decorated ship ever built by the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique (CGT) and was the first ocean liner decorated entirely in the Art Deco style.
