Sognefjord Tour

A must-do while in Bergen is going on a fjord tour. The tour I chose was the Sognefjord Tour. The Sognefjord is the longest fjord in the world and offers spectacular views for the whole ride. This exciting trip begins on the express boat Fjord 1. The double-decker boat is spacious with seating on both levels.

Leaving Bergen…The Sognefjord in a Nutshell cruise leaves early in the morning from the terminal Strandkaiterminalen

The scenery is beautiful.

This yellow dot on the screen shows us where we are along the Sognefjord.

Along the route as the boat sails in between narrow sounds and small islands, we see lush vegetation and forests, coastal pines as well as wild flowers.

The boat stops at different villages where passengers can get off and explore fjord country on their own.

Upon arrival to Flam, passengers who also reserve the train ride can get off here for the ride down the mountain.

Taking the Flamsbana train is a “must” when doing this tour and is a great way to end the day trip along the fjords.

Described as “one of the world’s most fantastic stretches of railroad” the Flamsbana climbs 900 metres from the fjord to the mountain top.

Described as “one of the world’s most fantastic stretches of railroad” the Flamsbana climbs 900 metres from the fjord to the mountain top. The waterfalls are breathtaking. Kjosfossen Falls (300 feet) is the most magnificent of all.

The Huldra is a Norwegian seductive forest creature, a secret troll princess hidden near the Kjosfossen waterfall. Folklore says that the Huldra lures young men into the forest to have sex with her, rewarding those who satisfy her and often killing those who don’t. No worries…it’s just a myth.

According to the locals, the Huldra has recently been on the news and is a topic of controversy, particularly because of the threat of danger the girls are faced with at this massive waterfall.
