Domaine Latour Burgundy Tasting

Burgundy is a place (a region) in France and is the birthplace for Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. So a white Burgundy wine is Chardonnay and a red Burgundy wine is Pinot Noir.

With over 20 selections available, the annual Louis Latour Burgundy tasting held by Atlantic Wines Inc. and led by Benard Retornaz, head of Maison Louis Latour USA, not only showcases fine wines throughout the Burgundy region, the event is also a true example of “terroir” – how the nature…the sun exposure, rain, wind patterns, climate, and the soil has everything to do with the wines that we taste.

We are talking about only two grapes, as mentioned above- Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Even within the same (Burgundy) region in France, because the grapes are grown in different places throughout the region, you have completely different wine styles. For example, a Chardonnay from the Chablis area in northern Burgundy with its crisp, dry, and light-bodied character is totally different from Chardonnay grown in the Mâconnais area of southern Burgundy that are full and smooth with ripe fruit aromas.

Highlights for me were comparing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir wines side-by-side from villages such as Beaune, Nuits Saint-Georges, Puligny-Montrachet, etc. all while meeting so many interesting people. Being able to sample several Prèmier Crus and Grand Crus from prestigious vineyards was also a treat!

Also, a special thanks goes out to Basil’s Restaurant & Tapas Bar. The food was great and the staff were the most welcoming and gracious hosts for this exclusive event!
