Munich Neighborhoods
Just as there’s more to New York City than Times Squares and other places to experience in Miami besides South Beach, there are many areas to explore in Munich in addition to the Marienplatz and Kaufingerstrasse. Here were some of my favorite neighborhoods in Munich.
Schwabing- one of Munich’s bohemian districts and most expensive residential areas. Students and artists mingle in pavement cafés, boutiques and bookshops. The Leopoldstrasse is the main street and is lined with coffee shops, bars, restaurants, and beautiful art nouveau architecture.
Maxvordstadt– Situated between Schwabing and the city center, this area is known as the University and museum center, but also has several bookshops, coffee shops and yoga studios.
Giesing– This is a residential area and where I stayed during my visit in Munich. There’s a nice Isar river walk, beautiful churches, and a cozy and intimate beer garden.
ALDSTAT (Old town)– The smaller streets just steps away from the Marienplatz make for a nice stroll near the city center. And just a little farther are also the Maximilianplatz and Maximilianstrasse. Attractive, less touristy, and one of the most exclusive areas in Munich.
Ludwigsvorstadt-Isarvorstadt and Sendling Tor – residential area within easy reach of the city center, and where you’ll find neighborhood bars and cool coffee shops. Pestalozzistrasse and surrounding streets become especially lively during the weekend nights.
Au-Haidhausen & the “French Quarter”– is mainly residential and lies just east of the city center, south of the Isar river.
