Wines of Spain & Tapas Party

Good food, great wines, and fun group of people, all under one roof. This was a private wine tasting presented by Ted Field, seasoned wine educator of Domaine Wine Distributors.  For this event, Ted took the group on a journey across Spain with seven wines from various Spanish wine regions. Wines were accompanied with tapas prepared by our gracious hosts, Bill and Susan.

We began with Alexandro Fino Sherry from Jerez, Spain. Unlike the sweeter styles of Sherry, the Alexandro is dry, has a delicate edge and makes for a good apéritif.

The Mas Codina Cava, made from Macabeo, Xarel-lo, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grape varietals is made in the traditional method even in the riddling which is done by hand. Cava wines to me can be hit or miss. But this was a pleasant sparkling wine and also served well as a palate opener.

We went through a several more white and red wines from various regions throughout Spain. The 1270 A Vuit Fino Priorat (Garnacha) and 2001 Ondarre Reserva Rioja (Tempranillo, Garnacha, and Mazuelo) were two other selections that were among the favorites. Well balanced. Nice tannins. Unaggressive. These red wines were pleasant both on their own and of course with food.
